E. Dobrowolska: justice will triumph only after those responsible for committing the crime of aggression against Ukraine are brought to justice

The EU Justice and Home Affairs Council taking place in Brussels is actively discussing legal mechanisms to ensure that the aggressors were forced to take responsibility and Ukraine and its people were awarded compensation for the damages.

According to Minister of Justice Ewelina Dobrowolska, it is now more important than ever to focus efforts on applying new legal tools in the context of military aggression in Ukraine. The European Union must be united in clearly condemning the aggression and ensuring that those guilty face liability as this is an essential precondition to restore peace and justice in Europe.

„Following the clear leadership of the Head of the European Commission in the field of ensuring that the aggressors face political, legal and financial responsibility, we strongly support these ambitious steps and we hope that in the near future we will all come together and agree on the missing legal mechanisms. Justice will triumph after those responsible stand trial and the proceeds from the frozen assets of Russia and its entities can be confiscated and used for reparations and reconstruction of Ukraine", – E. Dobrowolska emphasizes.

In the words of E. Dobrowolska, the sooner Europe mobilises united efforts to implement all possible formats for the administration of justice, including the establishment of a special tribunal, the sooner the victory of justice over impunity will be enjoyed by millions of suffering people of Ukraine.

The EU Council of Ministers also discussed the level of protection of journalists and civil society representatives against unfounded claims, the package of legislative proposals on the protection of the environment under criminal law and on judicial cooperation and access to justice in the field of digitalisation, as well as other relevant issues in the field of justice.
