Minister of Justice and EUIPO representative discussed the strengthening of intellectual property protection in Lithuania and the EU
Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė and Vice-Minister Barbara Aliaševičienė met with Edyta Demby-Siwek, Deputy Executive Director of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). During the meeting, they discussed the results of cooperation between Lithuania and the EUIPO, the strengthening of intellectual property protection, and future priorities in the European Union.
It was noted during the meeting that cooperation with the EUIPO is of strategic importance to the State Patent Bureau (SPB). Under the 2026 cooperation agreement, the SPB participates in 33 projects with a total value of EUR 588,367. The projects are aimed at harmonising EU industrial property protection practices, modernising services, strengthening the protection of rights, and promoting public and business education on intellectual property issues.
The long-standing cooperation with the EUIPO has enabled Lithuania to implement important digitalisation projects: all the electronic services of the SPB related to trade marks and designs have been moved to the electronic space, national registers have been modernised, and Lithuanian data have been integrated into EU public databases.
“Cooperation with the European Union Intellectual Property Office contributes not only to the strengthening of the intellectual property system in Lithuania, but also to business competitiveness and the protection of innovation across Europe,” stressed Vice-Minister Aliaševičienė during the meeting.
Lithuania’s participation in international projects implemented by the EUIPO was also discussed, including the SME Fund project implemented by the European Commission and the EUIPO, which supports intellectual property protection initiatives. Lithuania remains among the EU states that make the most active use of this financial support.
The meeting also discussed the Singapore Convention on Mediation – the UN international agreement to strengthen the enforcement of settlement agreements resulting from mediation in international commercial disputes.
The EUIPO is the European Union agency responsible for the registration of EU trade marks and designs, cooperation with the offices of the Member States, and the operation of the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights. The Office is based in Spain and, over more than three decades, has become one of the most important institutions modernising the intellectual property protection system in Europe.
