Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė met with Elizabeth Boyles, Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Lithuania

Today, December 15, Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė met with Elizabeth Boyles, Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Lithuania. The meeting addressed the priorities of Lithuania's upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union, cooperation between Lithuania and the United Kingdom in the transfer of sentenced persons, and other relevant issues in the field of justice.

The Minister emphasised on the issue of Lithuania's preparedness for the Presidency of the Council of the EU that preparatory work is in particular intensive. “The Ministry of Justice is making responsible efforts to prepare for the Presidency of the Council of the EU. With a year to go before the Presidency, the issues on which Lithuania will have to seek consensus are becoming clear – the European Commission plans to present an initiative on fighting firearms trafficking and to revise the rules on liability for drug trafficking,” said the Minister of Justice.

In addition, it is likely that there will be discussions during the Lithuanian Presidency on the revision of the European Public Prosecutor's Office Regulation, the European Investigation Order, and the strengthening of the competencies of Eurojust.

“Lithuania is ready to lead the negotiations actively and responsibly, seek balanced compromises, and ensure tangible progress in the most important law-making processes,” stressed the Minister.

Ms Tamašunienė emphasised the smooth and constructive cooperation based on mutual respect between Lithuania and the United Kingdom in the area of the transfer of sentenced persons. Given the large Lithuanian community in the United Kingdom, this partnership is considered particularly important, and the practical and solution-oriented dialogue between the authorities is highly valued.
