Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė met with Sirpa Rautio, Director of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA)
The meeting discussed the directions of cooperation between the FRA and Lithuania in preparation for Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, as well as the preparations by the FRA for the Fundamental Rights Forum on democracy to be held in Vienna in 2027, which will focus on democracy and will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the FRA.
The Ministry of Justice intends to cooperate closely with the FRA in the area of fundamental rights during the Presidency. During the Lithuanian Presidency, the Ministry of Justice, together with the Ministry of Social Security and Labour, will coordinate the activities of the FREMP (Fundamental Rights, Citizens’ Rights and Free Movement of Persons) Working Party of the Council of the EU. The areas of responsibility of the Ministry of Justice will include issues related to the application of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, cooperation with the FRA, the prevention of anti-Semitism, and other fundamental rights policy topics.
“Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union will take place during a complex geopolitical period, therefore, we must ensure that the strengthening of European security, the support for Ukraine and upholding of the principles of the rule of law go hand in hand with respect for human rights. The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights is an important partner that helps support decisions with facts and expert knowledge. We will strive to ensure that, during our Presidency, the FRA uses its expertise to contribute to high-quality discussions on the future of democracy and fundamental rights initiated by Lithuania,” said Rita Tamašunienė.
FRA Director Sirpa Rautio presented the opportunities of cooperation with the Agency at the Fundamental Rights Forum on democracy to be held in Vienna in March 2027 to mark the 20th anniversary of the FRA’s activities. The Forum intends to address the most important challenges of European democracy and fundamental rights.
