Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė met with the Ambassador of Japan to Lithuania Shinsuke Shimizu
Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė met with Shinsuke Shimizu, Ambassador of Japan to Lithuania. During the meeting, they discussed opportunities for cooperation between Lithuania and Japan in the field of justice, as well as Lithuania’s priorities in its upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The focus was on the development of legal cooperation in criminal and civil matters. The cooperation of Lithuania and Japan in these areas is not particularly intensive, however, Lithuania sees a need to expand and deepen this cooperation by promoting direct cooperation between central authorities.
“Cooperation with Japan is strategically important to us – we seek not only to continue, but also to substantially expand the legal dialogue, strengthen institutional relations and jointly address relevant issues of international justice,” said Minister of Justice Ms Tamašunienė.
It was emphasised in the discussion of Lithuania’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union that continued support for Ukraine, including international efforts to ensure accountability for the aggression against Ukraine, will remain one of the top priorities.
It was stressed that it is necessary to continue the consistent efforts for the establishment of the Special Tribunal, which would enable the assessment of the crime of aggression and the prosecution of those responsible. Emphasis was also made on the importance of the compensation of damage for Ukraine – the international community is urged to actively contribute to the mechanisms to ensure that russia compensates for the damage caused during the war. Lithuania has already initiated relevant international processes and urges other states to join these initiatives.
