The Ministers of Justice of Lithuania and Latvia discussed cooperation and the priorities of Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the EU

The Minister for Justice, Rita Tamašunienė, met with the Latvian Minister for Justice, Edvards Smiltens. During the meeting, they discussed opportunities for bilateral cooperation in the field of justice, common challenges facing both countries, and preparations for Lithuania’s forthcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The ministers discussed improvements to the penal system, ensuring the functioning of the courts during crises and times of war, and the protection of children in the digital sphere.

Much attention was paid to the priorities of Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the EU, particularly support for Ukraine, ensuring accountability for aggression and compensation for war-related damage.

“During Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, we will continue to ensure that support for Ukraine remains one of Europe’s top priorities. We must work consistently towards the establishment of a Special Tribunal to ensure that those responsible are held to account for the crime of aggression, as well as strengthen international efforts to ensure that Russia compensates Ukraine for the damage caused by the war. Close cooperation between states and a shared commitment to the pursuit of justice are essential to achieving these objectives,” said Rita Tamašunienė, Minister for Justice.
