Vice-Minister of Justice Kristina Zamarytė-Sakavičienė: ensuring of people-centred justice will be pursued at the international level
Vice-Minister Kristina Zamarytė-Sakavičienė participated in the high-level Justice Leaders’ Forum held by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and emphasised that the 20th Government that took office will pay particular attention to ensuring the independence, efficiency and transparency of the judiciary and to increasing public confidence in courts.
The Ministry of Justice, together with judicial self-government bodies, is working on new initiatives that will allow ensuring even greater efficiency and openness of Lithuanian courts to the public. There are plans to develop educational activities more actively by involving the media and to develop training programmes.
According to the Vice-Minister, the Communication Strategy of the Judiciary and the plan of its implementation measures were approved this year for this purpose. Traditional open days at courts also help ensure openness to the public.
Ms Zamarytė-Sakavičienė also noted the importance of adequate funding for ensuring the effective and transparent functioning of the judiciary, emphasised the progress made in the digitisation of court activities and the necessity to sully secure the rights of every citizen during judicial proceedings.
The Vice-Minister stressed the importance of mediation and the plans to establish it in the criminal justice system. This will ensure that the balance of justice between the offender and the victim is restored and, in the event of successful mediation, will create conditions to reduce the sentence imposed or to be imposed, reconcile the parties and improve prospects for damage compensation.
Kristina Zamarytė-Sakavičienė noted that the leadership of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development will enable the focused pursuit of a common goal – ensuring people-centred justice.
The Global High-Level Forum of Justice Leaders is taking place in Madrid (Kingdom of Spain).
On 5 July 2018, Lithuania officially became the 36th member of the OECD. The OECD has currently 38 member countries, with representatives from the EU and more than 70 countries participating in its activities.
