Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė discussed Lithuania’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU during a meeting with European Commissioner Michael McGrath
Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė met with Michael McGrath, EU Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, to discuss Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2027.
“During Lithuania’s Presidency, the most active agenda will be in the field of criminal law, but Lithuania will also devote significant attention to the topic of historical memory, which will be an important priority during the Presidency of the Council of the EU. We are witnessing consistent and intensifying attempts by russia to rewrite the European history. We must respond to this with European measures. We are already making efforts to establish the Pan-European Memorial for Victims of Totalitarianism in Brussels for the remembrance of the victims of totalitarian regimes, the implementation of which requires European funding,” Ms Tamašunienė noted at the meeting.
The Minister also stressed that Lithuania places particular emphasis on the ensuring of full support for Ukraine and on holding russia accountable for the international crimes. Ms Tamašunienė called upon the Member States of the European Union to complete the national processes necessary for the coming into force of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on the Management Committee of the Special Tribunal and the Council of Europe Convention establishing the International Claims Commission for Ukraine.
The Minister emphasised that the annual Rule of Law Reports and recommendations by the European Commission are an important measure for strengthening judicial independence and ensuring the effective functioning of the judicial system.
“Lithuania implements consistently the recommendations of the European Commission. We can note progress in both areas that received special attention – the transparency of the appointment process of judges and the strengthening of the State-guaranteed legal aid system,” noted the Minister of Justice.
