Minister of Justice: seeking the possibility for national minorities to write their names and surnames with diacritical marks
Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė met with Henryka Mościcka-Dendys, Head and Director-General of the Foreign Service of the Republic of Poland. During the meeting, they discussed the bilateral relations of Lithuania and Poland, the situation of national minorities, the spelling of personal names and the issues of education.
“Poland is our strategic partner, with whom we share close political, economic and cultural ties. Equally important is a consistent dialogue on the rights of national minorities, in particular in terms of the spelling of personal names and education. We hope that the Poles living in Lithuania will also have the possibility of preserving the authentic spelling of their personal names. This is a matter of respect for human identity, cultural heritage and compliance with European human rights standards,” said Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė.
The meeting also highlighted that cooperation between Lithuania and Poland in various fields is steadily strengthening and that issues concerning national communities, in particular the education of national minorities, are an important part of the bilateral dialogue.
Poles are the largest ethnic community in Lithuania. According to data from the 2024 Population and Housing Census, the Polish national minority accounts for 6 percent of the country's population.
