Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė: it is essential to maintain a balance between the value-based expectations of society and responsibility to protect human dignity

Today, the Ministry of Justice hosted a discussion forum “Revolution of Rights or Inflation of Rights”, bringing together experts of law, academics and social activists to discuss and seek solutions to issues of legal morality, legislative inflation, and the development of human rights.

According to Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė, this topic is becoming increasingly relevant in contemporary lawmaking in the search for solutions to strengthen the rule of law rather than create regulatory inflation that complicates both the application of law and its understanding by society.

“Law cannot be completely detached from its value base. However, at the same time, it cannot be based solely on subjective moral judgment. A democratic state governed by the rule of law must maintain a balance between the expectations of society regarding values and the responsibility to protect human dignity and inherent rights,” the Minister emphasised at the event.

The forum also discussed family policy, the protection of child’s interests, the relationship between human rights and bioethics, and demographic challenges.

Presentations at the event were delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Danguolė Bublienė, President of the Supreme Court of Lithuania; Ramutė Ruškytė, former judge of the Constitutional Court; Daniel Naumov, Vice-Minister of Health; Waldemar Urban, Vice-Minister of Economy and Innovation. The forum also hosted an exhibition of final painting works by students of Vilnius Justinas Vienožinskis Art School – The Beginning. The exhibition featured final works from various periods, explored the topics of family, closeness, home environment, childhood, search for identity by a young person.
