Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė: we must strengthen the unity of the Baltic States and coordinate positions on the strategic issues of justice policy

Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė met with Edvards Smiltēns, Minister of Justice of Latvia, and Liisa-Ly Pakosta, Minister of Justice and Digital Affairs of Estonia. During the meeting, the Ministers of the Baltic States discussed opportunities for closer cooperation in the field of justice, the preparations for Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the EU, and continued support for Ukraine.

“Close cooperation with Latvia and Estonia is particularly important to us in today’s geopolitical situation. We are ready to maintain an open and constructive dialogue and to strengthen joint initiatives in the field of justice,” said Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė.

Lithuania is actively preparing for the Presidency of the Council of the EU. Ms Tamašunienė briefed the Ministers of Latvia and Estonia about the main priorities of Lithuania’s Presidency, which are focused on the most important geopolitical challenges. In the field of justice, the intention is to focus on the area of criminal law.

During the meeting, the Minister emphasised that unconditional support for Ukraine will remain one of the top priorities of the State.

“We are making every effort to ensure that Ukraine receives the support necessary and that the aggressor is held fully accountable for the international crimes. Ukraine needs help today, which is why we consistently urge countries to take concrete action in both multilateral and bilateral formats,” noted Ms Tamašunienė.

During the meeting, the Ministers agreed to continue actively cooperating at the regional and EU levels, to coordinate positions on the strategic issues of justice policy, and to strengthen the unity of the Baltic States in addressing common challenges.
