Rita Tamašunienė: the rights of national minorities are an important part of the partnership between Lithuania and Poland

Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė met with Andrzej Krzysztof Dudziński, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland, Dariusz Wiśniewski, Consul General, and Wojciech Kłyś, Secretary of the Embassy of Poland, to discuss issues related to national minorities.

“The partnership between Lithuania and Poland is strategically important and based on shared values and interests. Among the many areas of our cooperation, ensuring the rights of national minorities holds a special place, as respect for human identity and cultural distinctiveness is the foundation of a strong democratic state,” said the Minister.

The meeting discussed the use of diacritical marks in official documents and the possibility of writing names and surnames with diacritical marks as an integral part of a person's identity.

“Lithuanians living in Poland already have this possibility, therefore, we will look for ways to ensure that the Poles living in Lithuania can also exercise these rights,” the Minister noted.

Poles are the largest ethnic community in Lithuania. According to 2021 data, the Polish ethnic minority accounts for 6.58 percent of the country's population.
