The Minister of Justice R. Tamašunienė met with the Ambassador of the Netherlands J. Twiss Quarles van Ufford
Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė met with Jack Twiss Quarles van Ufford, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Lithuania. During the meeting, they discussed prospects for cooperation between Lithuania and the Netherlands in the field of justice, with particular emphasis on support for Ukraine, strengthening of international criminal law, and preparation for Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Much attention was paid to discussing issues related to the establishment of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine. The Minister has emphasised that Lithuania is actively contributing to this process and seeks the broadest possible political and financial international support. Lithuania will join the Extended Partial Agreement on the Establishment of the Management Committee of the Special Tribunal – this decision has already been approved by the Government.
The meeting also discussed Lithuania’s support for the International Criminal Court in the Hague. Lithuania consistently supports the Court with additional financial contributions, the delegation of national experts, and the strengthening of special investigator missions. The Minister has emphasised that it is particularly important to continue supporting the Court at a time when its activities are facing political pressure and sanctions.
As for Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, it has been noted that the public sector is actively preparing for the presidency. Lithuania is determined to conduct negotiations on all future legislative initiatives in an active and responsible manner.
“The Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union will take place during a particularly important period, when the European Union will have to make decisions on security, defence, support for Ukraine, and strengthening the rule of law,” said the Minister.
The newly approved Action Plan for the Implementation of the Twentieth Government Programme, in which international commitments, especially strong and consistent support for Ukraine, remain one of the main priorities of Lithuanian policy, was also presented.
