Today, having taken the oath in the Seimas, the new Minister of Justice, Rita Tamašunienė, begins her duties
Today, 25 September, Rita Tamašunienė assumes office as Minister of Justice in the XX Government.
The new Minister of Justice intends to devote considerable attention to the expansion, improvement, and accessibility of state-guaranteed legal aid; to addressing the situation of improving conditions for judges; to strengthening the system of legal protection; to reducing bureaucratic burdens; and to creating an effective system for the enforcement of penalties.
“The position of Minister of Justice carries great responsibility. I intend to make every effort to achieve the set objectives and, at the same time, to ensure that the Ministry of Justice is recognised as a professional, reliable, and open institution for society,” the Minister stated.
Among her most important international priorities, Ms Tamašunienė identifies preparations for Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union. She also emphasises the importance of strengthening cooperation with foreign partners in the field of justice, as well as the need to continue unwavering support for Ukraine in its pursuit of sustainable, long-term, and just peace.
Ms Tamašunienė holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Mykolas Romeris University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Education and German Philology from Vilnius Pedagogical University (now Vytautas Magnus University Education Academy).
In 2019–2020, Ms Tamašunienė served as Minister of the Interior. Since 2012, she has been a Member of the Seimas, and she has also held the position of Deputy Director of the Administration of Vilnius District Municipality.
Ms Tamašunienė has been awarded the Silver Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland, as well as the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas for achievements in the field of human capital development.
